The 1XI were glad to see the end of a dismal 2016 and look to start the 2017 in an improved fashion at home against high-flying Chobham. From the team that lost 3-0 away at Holloway just before Christmas, the starting XI welcomed back Cook, Hooker, Tye and Captain Green.
Chobham started fast and but for two very good saves fom Adam Barrett it could have been a very familiar story for SHFC. However, a naughty tackle by George Barrett that warranted a booking also sparked ‘mere into gear.
About twenty minutes in the boys cleared a corner and found Cook out left who played an outrageous 40-yard pass to play in Dave Tye who expertly slotted home. Chobham naturally hit back and five minutes later Hooker snapped the Chobham ST and gave away a penalty, which was duly missed in odd circumstances.
Ten minutes later SHFC were two up as Matt ‘The Fat Sunbed’ Cook powered in a free-kick from 30 yards out.
The Second Half had only one pattern: Chobham attack vs ‘Mere Defence. The away side bombarded the ‘mere box with long balls and shots, but SHFC held strong due to some great saves from Adam and excellently timed tackles, particularly from Pete ‘Superman’ Chadwick.
Chobham did manage to scramble in a goal with twenty minutes to go to make it ‘squeaky bum time’ for the Mere, but the boys held on to take home a much needed, deserved and welcomed 3 points.
