1st team match report
Saturday 8th September
Milford & Witley FC 0-4 Shottermill & Haslemere
The first league game of the new season saw Haslemere face Milford & Witley in a local derby. The first 20 minutes saw a fairly even match, Milford & Witley having the better of the play, including a great headed chance at the back post that was cleared off the line by the Haslemere defence. Haslemere right back Callum Cole dealt with a tricky Milford left winger very well in the early stages. Callum’s brother and Haslemere goalkeeper, Jozef Cole relieved the pressure on the Haslemere defence with some accurate and powerful distribution.
Haslemere grew into the game and an aggressive run by right-midfielder Jack Manuel down the right wing took it past the Milford left back. Left with acres of space he was able to put a cross along the opposition’s 6 yard box. The Milford keeper got a slight hand to it and the ball fortuitously fell to Chris Sturt who tapped in on the volley from close range. 0-1 Haslemere.
The momentum from the first goal led to a period of sustained pressure from Haslemere and no more than 5 minutes later, Adam Bicknell hit the top right corner with a dangerous cross/shot from 25 yards out. 0-2 going into half time.
The second half began much the same, Haslemere with momentum and dominance. Looking to compound the success of the first half, a spritely move saw Haslemere striker Andy Yates glance a cross off his head and into the path of left-midfielder George Barrett, who welcomingly nodded in the third.
Milford were now pushing forward in an attempt to get back into the game. Haslemere’s defence dealt extremely well with the pressure, heading clear multiple times and consistently well timed with the tackling. Great teamwork and concentration from all those in defence and in midfield saw out the majority of Milford’s pressing with ease.
The final goal for Haslemere came from a long ball over the top of the Milford defence, with keeper scrambling out to try and clear, Andy Yates lobbed the ball over his head and, bouncing, nestled into the back of the net. 0-4 now, and no threat of a Milford comeback substitutes were beginning to be introduced. Kelvin Wint, Cam Nutter and Cam Lillywhite all featured towards the end and were equally solid in scuppering any Milford break or attacking presence.
The game ended 0-4 to Haslemere, who claim their first points in the league. A healthy score line against decent opposition and a clean sheet to add.
The firsts will be looking to take the momentum from this victory into their next league game, versus Lyne Seniors at home on the 22nd.
Man of the match: Adam Bicknell (1 goal, 1 assist)
